8 Triathletes, 6 of them JETS turned up for a Scottish Cycling training day at a very windy Ingliston. the day consisted of 3 hours of almost continuous cycling and made for a very hard workout.

The day started off with some pace line training to make sure everyone could handle their bikes and then on to some criterium racing, which for the uninitiated is a race of several laps around a short course, with a pace bike in front to keep the pack bunched up, the riders are then let loose for the final laps for a sprint finish. This was hard for the triathlete to get their heads round as it is so different from the usual time trial situation in a triathlon. Poor Erin was brought off her bike twice during this set by riders coming off in front of her, one of them being her brother, so you can imagine the atmosphere in the car on the way home.

The final set of the day was a couple of racing using an Australian method of handicaping, slower riders do less distance , with the fast riders having to try and unlap themselves during the race.

During final debriefing session the coach asked the rider what they had learned during the day with Jennie McD replying “stick to running” to the amusement of all.

These coaching session are open to all over 12’s just bring a road bike and helmet, and run monthly. I will post a list of dates on here when I get them.

Sessions must be booked in advance by contacting Paul Newnham at Scottish Cycling

The spooky thing was all the triathlete were brother/sister teams - Is this a growing trend in Triathlon?

Cold weather greeted the athletes after the swim session as they prepared to set out on the bikes.

The challenge for the session was paired sprint laps of the 0.5 km circuit with the target time 1 minute. Several riders almost made it, even the oldies :).
